Palaeozoic stromatoporoid diagenesis: a synthesis

چکیده

Abstract Palaeozoic stromatoporoids, throughout their 100-million + year history (Middle Ordovician to Late Devonian and rare Carboniferous), are better preserved than originally aragonite molluscs, but less well-preserved low magnesium-calcite brachiopods, bryozoans, trilobites corals. However, the original mineralogy of stromatoporoids remains unresolved, details diagenesis patchy. This study approximately 2000 literature recognises three diagenetic stages, applicable geological history. Timing processes may vary in between stages; some components not always present. Stage 1, on or just below sediment surface, comprises following: micrite filling upper gallery space after death, then any remaining by non-ferroan ferroan calcite decreasing oxygen pore-waters; partial lithification associated from which be exhumed redeposited, evidence general early middle shallow-marine carbonates; microdolomite formation, with Mg interpreted have been derived high-Mg (HMC) (likely overlaps 2). 2, short distance comprising fabric-retentive recrystallisation (FRR) stromatoporoid skeletons forming irregular (FRIC), mostly orientated normal growth layers, best seen cross-polarised light. FRIC stops at margins contact bioclasts. geometry varies, indicating taxonomic control. Evidence that formed includes syntaxial continuation into sub-stromatoporoid cavities (Type 1 cement), although others were pre-occupied cement fills 2 cement) before FRR, preventing cavities. Likely contemporaneous argillaceous micrites drew carbonate adjacent during reorganisation limestone–marl rhythms also diagenetic. 3, largely shallow burial, dissolution silicification, these occurred earlier histories (more data required); burial pressure stylolites.

Leaf anatomy of a late Palaeozoic cycad

Today, cycads are a small group of gymnospermous plants with a limited distribution in the (sub)tropics, but they were major constituents of Mesozoic floras. Fossil leaves sporadically found in latest Carboniferous and Permian floras have putatively been ascribed to cycads. However, their true affinity remains unclear due to the lack of anatomical evidence. Virtually all modern cycads have pinn...

Diagenesis of Luxembourg Sandstone

Research has been conducted into the diagenesis of the Luxembourg Sandstone. Literature studies were followed by a visit to the outcrop, after which thin sections were studied. The Luxembourg Sandstone Formation has been deposited in the Hettangian and Sinemurian, both lower Jurassic ages. A sea strait connecting the Northern German Basin and the Paris Basin was located in present day Luxembour...

Week – 8: Lithification and Diagenesis

This paper presents a mineralogical and chemical investigation of shale deposits from the U.S. Gulf coast in order to document the mechanisms and reactions involved in the diagenetic conversion of smectite into illite. Cuttings from the 1,250 to 5,500 m stratigraphic interval of a well were sorted by grain size and analzyed by x-ray diffraction to assess chemical and mineralogical trends with d...

The characters of Palaeozoic jawed vertebrates

Newly discovered fossils from the Silurian and Devonian periods are beginning to challenge embedded perceptions about the origin and early diversification of jawed vertebrates (gnathostomes). Nevertheless, an explicit cladistic framework for the relationships of these fossils relative to the principal crown lineages of the jawed vertebrates (osteichthyans: bony fishes and tetrapods; chondrichth...
